Overnight Radio And The Bee

Sunday, July 6th, 2008

Overnight radio broadcasts (on the FM and AM bands) come generally is either one of two forms.  Music stations have their announcers pre-record their content (this is known in the industry as “voicetracking”) … or they just become a jukebox, and play music without any announcers at all.  On AM talk stations, the option is live call-in talk shows that come from somewhere else other than Rochester.  At WBEE, we have always thought that overnight radio listeners are just as important as those who listen during the daytime.  WBEE has Rochester’s ONLY live, local overnight radio broadcast, which allows us to interact with the listeners (play requests and give away stuff), announce breaking news, and give weather updates as they happen.  For the better part of my nineteen year tenure at the Bee, I’ve been the host of the overnight program.  It is my pleasure to occupy that shift and allow us (you and I) to keep each other company.  Whether you be coming home after the B shift, working the C shift, getting up early for the A shift, nursing the newborn, or just can’t sleep, you can depend us to be there for you … live and local between the hours of midnight through 5:30AM.  For those who may not be familiar with what he have to offer, here’s a quick summary.  Of course there’s country music … AT LEAST 10-in-a-row every hour.  Information updates from News 8 Now at 12:35AM, 2:50AM, and 5:20AM, weather updates from Stormwatch 8 chief meteorolgist Scott Hetsko throughout the morning, Country Music News at 2:35AM and 5:10AM, Showbiz Buzz (entertainment news) at 3:35AM, the latest lottery numbers, and, overnights on WBEE is the only place in Rochester where you can hear ”Last Night On Tonight With Jay Leno” (1:35AM and 5:15AM).  Plus constant time and temperature checks for those on the go.

In a world where the overnight radio listener is generally ingnored, we’ll deliver.  Remember always that you are more than just listeners.  You are a part of our extended family.  We cherish each and every one of you.
